Freggio is a body of photographic artwork built around a single obsession: The pursuit of an impossible beauty. Each work presents a figure in handmade original costume, constructed from vintage Japanese obi fabric, metallic leaf, and found materials, and places them in a world that exists somewhere between Sci-Fi, Anime, and the classical Japanese textile tradition. No digital effects. No shortcuts. Every detail made by hand.
Freggio® - 2024.
In 2016 I stumbled upon a piece of music by Matt Dunkley entitled ‘Cycle 1’ from an EP called ‘Six Cycles’. It was (and is) to me an absolutely extraordinary piece of work. Even now after countless listenings, I still struggle to get through it without having to wipe tears from my eyes. ‘Cycle 1’ is one of the purest and most overwhelming examples of beauty I have ever encountered. To me it is creative perfection.
Unusually for me, I took to social media and commented on Matt's post.
@Mattdunkleymuso I think if I ever create anything even half as beautiful as this. I shall be done. #achieved #complete #allstop
And, after rediscovering and reflecting on this while writing this statement. I think, that is what I am trying to do.
Each work I create may have a slightly different theme, a new inspiration, an alternative technique. But each is an evolution of the previous. A step towards an unimaginable perfection. A goal once achieved there will cease to be further goals... The ultimate completion of the work.
Of course, this objective may never be attained. But the journey is often more important than the destination.
I hope you enjoy the journey.
